What is a cryptographic hash function?

A cryptographic hash function takes an input (like a text string) and produces a fixed-size output called a digest or hash. The same input always produces the same output, but even a tiny change in the input produces a completely different hash. Hashes are used for data integrity checks, password storage, and digital signatures.

What is the difference between MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, and SHA-512?

MD5 produces a 128-bit (32 hex character) digest and is fast but cryptographically broken — avoid it for security-sensitive purposes. SHA-1 produces a 160-bit (40 hex character) digest and is also deprecated for security use. SHA-256 (part of SHA-2) produces a 256-bit (64 hex character) digest and is the current standard for most security applications.
